Don't bother with the ineffective so-called Wallpaper strippers

Paper Tiger Wallcovering Perferator

We don't recommend any of the liquid wallcovering strippers since they are expensive and generally cause more work. This product says it is non staining but that has not been my experience. I have had staining problems with it in the past when I have tested it. This size container costs about $6.00 and it claims to treat 75 square feet. You may not even get 75 square feet in dry weather and you could very well use double that amount. That is 8-16 cents/square foot and that is about how much paint costs. It also can leave a film on the wall and leave residue in your carpet and or floor. My advice is too just use water. To remove the border in this DIY lesson, I used a gallon of water. It can take gallons of water to remove an entire room so DIF could get very expensive with no advantages.

If the wallcovering would not peel off, or wetting it did not work because of a thin vinyl coating, you may need this tool to perforate the vinyl coating with holes to puncture the vinyl coating to allow water to penetrate and soften the paste for removal. It cost about $8.00 at home depot.

Some final tips
  • Let the water do the work
  • Let the water do the work
  • Let the water do the work
  • Put old newspapers down along with plenty of drop clothes or old sheets to absorb the water
  • Keep the doors closed in the room you are working in. You need to keep the humidity up
  • Don't have the AC or heat blowing in the room you are working in since it will dry out what your are trying to keep wet
  • Keep it wet.
  • If you have a laminate or floating wood floor tape it off with plastic to keep the moisture off it since excessive moisture could damage those types of floors if water gets between the slats
  • You may also need to tape off the base to prevent water from getting behind the base and causing damage
